Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my child need to be to participate?

Grades 1 through 8.

Can my child play for CEYFA if we do not live in the Chittenden East School District?

Yes.  If your town does not offer a football program, come and join the Wolverine Family!

How much of a time commitment do we need to make?

Our program runs from mid August to the end of October with an end of season banquet in early November.

Practices start the 3rd Monday in August and typically run 5:30 to 8:00, though practice times are adjusted as the season progresses and the days get shorter.  5th through 8th graders will attend practice 5 nights a week for the first two weeks to get 10 practices under their belts to allow for competitive play.  Flag players will attend practice 2-3 days a week for the first two weeks.  Beginning the third week, Flaggers will practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays with games during the week and/or on Saturdays.  5th through 8th grade teams will practice Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with games on Saturdays (generally in the morning).  Typically, teams will play 7-9 games within the season.

How far will we have to travel for away games?

Most games are held within Chittenden County, however, usually once, maybe twice a year, our team will need to travel as far as Castleton, St. Johnsbury or Manchester, VT.

Is this flag or tackle football?

1st through 4th graders play 7 on 7 flag football (without equipment).

5th through 8th graders play tackle football with full equipment. They are divided into two teams- 5th/6th and 7th/8th with occasional exceptions made based on skill level and experience.

What is a “JAMBOREE''?

After the initial two weeks of practice, our teams will participate in a jamboree, hosted and held at a competitor’s field in which many other teams from the Northern Vermont Youth Football League (NVYFL) will scrimmage one another.  This is a chance for players to get some of those initial jitters out, and experience competition on a smaller field in a little less formal atmosphere before their first official game.  It also allows coaches to see their players match up against other teams and determine where adjustments may need to be made.

What equipment do I need to purchase/provide for my child?

Flag players will need to come to the field with a water bottle, cleats and a mouth guard.

Tackle players are encouraged to wear athletic supporters (aka cup), and will need a water bottle, cleats, socks, and a mouth guard.  Some tackle players prefer to purchase their own padded pants, though CEYFA will provide these.

What equipment does CEYFA provide?

We provide each flag player with the following: Uniform (top and bottom). We provide each tackle player with the following: helmet, chin strap, shoulder pads, girdle, pants, belt(s), practice jersey and uniform jersey.

Will my child be safe?

Injuries and accidents can happen in any sport.  We take every step possible to ensure our players’ safety.

All of our coaches complete background checks and are USA Football Certified which includes training in health and safety- head (concussions), heart, heat and emergency action planning, abuse prevention, as well as principles of contact, equipment fitting and levels of contact.

There is medical personnel at each game.

There are league weight limits for ball carriers and each tackle player must complete 10 practices before playing in competition.

Can I volunteer?

Our answer to that is a resounding YES!  A top notch program cannot happen without the help of everyone.  It is our belief that everyone has a gift or talent that they can contribute to enhance our players’ experience.

Do you provide scholarships?

We don’t want anyone to miss out on the fantastic opportunities that football affords to embrace hard work, to be part of a team and to build character, regardless of a family’s ability to pay.  If the registration fee is a barrier to your child’s ability to participate in Wolverine Football, please reach out to Eva McLaughlin here to discuss obtaining a partial or full scholarship.

Are there other opportunities for my child to play football?

Mount Mansfield Union High School hosts a three day summer camp in July.

Vermont All-Star Football Camp is a week-long camp in July.

CEYFA holds preseason workouts, times TBD.
